The Tautological Congress consists of a high-frequency radio transmission to outer space organised as a tribute to Aditya Mandayam (1983–2019), the founder of a collective artistic practice called Brud. The live transmission will be sent from the Vilnius Television Tower, comprising a diverse mix of Brud-related material and tributes. This heterogeneous blend will include text translated to Morse code; sounds such as voice, music, poetry, scripts, and recordings; images converted to SSTV; and various sonified data. Depending on weather conditions, the transmission may not be detectable on Earth using radio receivers, but it will continue to traverse outer space eternally, potentially remaining accessible forever alongside cosmic noise, signals employed by NASA for distant missions, and failed intercontinental transmissions that never rebounded to our planet’s surface. If the idea fails, there will be a possibility to listen to the transmission using FM radio receivers. In addition, the event will be streamed live online on this page and on Radio Vilnius, Radio Nopal, Mensajito Mx, and Lumbung Radio. A recording of it will be available throughout the duration of the 1st Vilnius Biennial of Performance Art.
The performance is conceived by the artist Juan Pablo Villegas (Mexico City) and curators Virginija Januškevičiūtė (Vilnius) and Post Brothers (Białystok and Copenhagen). The contributors include Bea McMahon, Garret Sharma, Tobias Wolf, Rio Ikeshiro, Giuseppe Severini, Paul Elliman, Oscar Pavón, Požemis, Elena Narbutaitė, Robert M. Ochshorn, Kaspars Groševs, Andrzej Szpindler, Tomasz Kowalski, Maess Anand, Myriam B. The event will also reflect Mandayam’s long-term engagement with the music and visual art scenes in Vilnius, where he participated in numerous public events and teaching situations and maintained long-term friendships and artistic collaborations. The event is organised in partnership with Vilnius University Radio Club LY1BWB, Vilnius TV Tower, Vilnius Academy of Arts, Muto, Radio Vilnius, and Draugų vardai.
